After flying for the US Army in China during WWII at 19, the author - who will eventually become an executive of and advisor to the Smithsonian Institution's National Air And Space Museum - becomes a test pilot during the era when the first jets are coming online and the USAF is created as a separate branch of the military. There are plenty of piston power flying tales here to go along with his early jet experiences.
