A Farewell To Arms. Hemingway, Ernest. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1957. This is Hemingway's fictionalized tale of an American volunteer driving an ambulance for the Italians in World War I, based on his own experiences of war (and love, in the form of an English nurse) as one of the same in the Italian campaigns against the Austrians. Some have called this the best war novel, with its portrayal the brutality of war and of the driver's tragic relationship with the nurse before that backdrop.
